He blends his set with deep tracks from all eras and categories. When Leland is hosting The Morning Sound Alternative, he tries to play as much new music as he can find. He loves music that was recorded 90 years ago and music that was recorded last week.ĭuring roots and branches, Leland chooses Americana music, which he defines as “anything that connects with roots music, be it folk, country, gospel, blues, from any and all eras and artists.” He generally narrows the shows to “topics” to somewhat narrow the focus, but the emphasis is always to play two hours of great Americana music, curated to eliminate the chaff. He has been doing Roots and Branches since its inception and also hosts the Morning Sound Alternative on the fourth Monday of every month. He was on the staff of the long-lamented Denver radio experiment, KCUV (Colorado’s Underground Voice), from 2004-2008. Sweet Lunacy, his documentary film co-written and produced with Don Chapman, is a history of the Boulder music scene from the 1950s-1980s.

He wrote for the Musichound series and edited Musichound Blues. He spent five years as managing editor of Blues Access magazine, and was the first editor of Boulder Weekly. With Gil Asakawa, he hosted At the Turntables in the late 1980s on KGNU, and Music Talk on KBCO in the 1990s. He was entertainment editor at the Colorado Daily in the days when it was a proud alternative to the Daily Camera, and wrote the Pump It Up column there for many years. He spent more than 25 years as a music and pop culture critic, reporter and editor, writing for dozens of publications, many in Boulder. Biography: Leland Rucker has been addicted to music for as long as he can remember.
